Attaching Hardware Torque Specifications

The hardware that holds universal joints into yokes should be torqued to specific values for proper joint function and long life. It is of particular concern with u-bolts in the smaller joint sizes but is nontheless important for all bolts and capscrews.

U-Bolt Kits
U-bolts are usually found on outside snap ring series joints. It is rare but there are a few cases of u-bolts used on inside snap ring joints. Note that the u-joint kit numbers shown are the standard kit part number - all joint kits within a series will use the same u-bolt kit and torque value.

Bearing Strap Kits
Straps and bolts are used in a wide variety of joint styles and sizes. Many yokes that were once available in u-bolt style have been discontinued in favor of strap style yokes because of the tendency of installers to over torque u-bolts and damage u-joints.

Bearing Plate Bolts
Spicer 10 Series joints now use a bolt with a serrated underside on the head to bite into the bearing plate and hold in conjunction with factory applied thread locker. The old style lock tabs are still available but a longer bolt must be used when installed with the new style bearing plate. We recommend replacing these bolts if they are removed for any reason.
